Canon history: His is a magical world. Ever since the beginning, magic has been pervasive in every living thing, from the humans and animals that walk the ground to the plants that reach for the heavens. Though there is magic everywhere, not everything can use it. Some may only have a trickle, some may have it sleep forever. Others can become full blown "mages" of a sort, able to cast and draw magic from the air, and others... Well. Others lose it entirely, through dark processes that are feared and poorly understood. These poor souls have the magic burn throughout them, mutating them into horrible, chimeric beasts called Chaotics, a void of magic and sense that are violent killers. Chaotics have roamed the fringes of society since the beginning, and in turn ancient sects like the Sentinels were formed to fight them. With protections against the crueller parts of the world, humanity began to spread and flourish.

In antiquity, animals with enough magic began to spread, becoming sapient themselves. They learned to walk and talk, developed anthropomorphic forms, and began to form their own societies. But early humans feared them, a fear made worse by the animalistic appearances and behaviors of Chaotics, and so they attempted to drive them out, called them "demons" to differentiate and, well, literally demonize them in the process. The animals fought back however; some forced their way into human settlements, others found ways for all to be able to take human forms to hide or blend better if they chose. Over time their efforts paid off and they gained their own permanent civilizations, began to spread as well. Through the centuries "demon" continued to be used, but enough time passed that it's only a shorthand between humans, anthropomorphic/"civilized" animals, and wild animals now, and is rarely a term of hate anymore. Usually.

In modern times, many cities and countries cross the earth. Magic has continued to be a presence of course, tools for good or for ill, and unfortunately while Chaotics and the occasional other monster still threaten, advancements have continued. Groups like the Sentinels still exist, often in their own settlements or in specific groups in other cities, training for years to learn the best ways to fight Chaotics or other such threats. People- humans and demons alike -with more active magic also have places they can go to for their own training, if their family doesn't do it, as it often passes down through the blood. And even with all this going on, people still go to school, to work, ride the bus and take selfies with their food. Life, as always, is what it will be.

History: Daniel hails from East Hollow, a small walled town founded by Sentinels to protect the areas around them and to train more warriors to send out into the world wherever they were needed. He was adopted in infancy by his godparents and raised as their own, and though he'd eventually be told of his adoption, he thinks of them no less and considers them his parents; he does, admittedly, harbor a curiosity about his birth parents, but so far hasn't moved on finding them.

Childhood and pre-teen years progressed as normal for someone in Daniel's position. He went to school in and around his training, which involved any number of methods from punches and kicks to using archery. Once he got old enough he chose his own weapon, forearm gauntlets that conceal enchanted blades, and training would focus on those. Around the age of 14, about 4-6 years out from becoming a full Sentinel, Daniel's parents were hired out for security in another city, and he went along with them. Leaving his friends and life in East Hollow was sad, but he was able to make a new one in Birchpointe well enough. Over the next couple of years he continued school, training under his parents, hanging out with his (blood) cousins who also lived there, and made some other friends (including joining their band as bassist, once he learned it).

All wouldn't last so well, though. While out one night Daniel was attacked by a shadowed figure and all but flattened to the street. Even though he was a decent fighter he couldn't get the figure off him, and it was only the timely intervention of someone else passing by that the shadow was chased off. By then Daniel was covered in freely bleeding cuts and scrapes, so the person bundled him up home with them. It was there in patching him up that they discovered the bite, and over the course of the rest of the night Daniel made the full change into his current state of vampire.

It's been a little under a year since then, and while he's gotten enough of a handle on it to live day-to-day alright, there's been no progress on finding the "parent" and bringing them in, or in being able to change Daniel back, if anyone ever could.

Unfortunately, a few months after that (and not long before arriving in Diatu itself), something unthinkable happened: Chaotics attacked East Hollow. Daniel and his parents, of course, heard this secondhand from their new position but returned home as quickly as they could to offer support and help rebuild. There was a question, sure, of how Chaotics could surprise a town of Sentinels and not only that, nearly wipe it off the map. The answer was numbers. Thousands of them had been in one place and had swarmed the town of fighters, almost cleaning it out. The recovery has been hitting everyone hard, and Daniel's put the vampire search on hold for it. And despite not having been in East Hollow at the time, just the sheer scope of it has been taking its toll in the form of nightmares, worry, fright...

Sudden vampire attack... Chaotic swarm... When you yourself are a shadow, what can you do when the dark starts fighting back...?

Personality:
  • Guarded and Observant: Daniel likes to keep to himself, try to read the room before he really takes any action. This has come of a life of being taught to always watch your six (and your twelve, and your three, and...) because attacks could come from anywhere, and it's only increased with the input coming in from his stronger vampire senses. Though he's not completely passive, he prefers to observe rather than lead (though he can certainly instigate enough, particularly if he and his friends feel like shenanigans). He reveals things about himself rather reluctantly, and prefers to draw information out of the other person instead. If there's a tiny detail to be found in the room, you can bet Daniel will see it.

  • Loyal and Friendly: Quiet though he is, he bonds easily with people and they can always count on Daniel to be in their corner. He'll defend absolutely anyone who needs it (combatative or otherwise), and has strong morals he has dedicated himself to, to make things as safe for as many people as he can. This does make him a bit stubborn when it knocks up against his temper (more on that in a minute), particularly if he misreads a situation, but even if you had an argument with Daniel that'd land you on the couch, it wouldn't be long before you'd find him sitting with you to make things right.

  • Temperamental: Daniel's temper is right under the surface, often left raw by his worse moods. It rises too easily at times, leading to sharp rebukes and bitter glares. Additionally he has a mouth on him and curses freely, doubly so if he's upset. Some nights he doesn't sleep well, which only tends to make this worse. He can get pretty sarcastic, which is more likely the more you've known him and he knows he can relax around you; conversely this makes it extremely easy to get a rise out of him for shiggles' sake. Even in his worst moods the only thing sharp is Daniel's tongue; you really only have to fear his fists if you've decided to take an opposing, battle sort of stance against him.

  • Depressive: To say that his life has been turned upside-down a few times by now would be an understatement. Though some of them have been good, recent events have cut him through his core, and he's still adjusting to both. Becoming a vampire has completely changed his habits and comfort with himself, and the knowledge of the Chaotic attack on his hometown completely changed his ideas of safety. Pile that on top of being a moody, quiet teenager and you have someone who has to completely rewrite himself. This leaves Daniel in low moods, particularly in the dead of night when few but him are even awake, leaving him alone to his thoughts. His quiet tendencies double, and it can be pretty hard to lift him out of it. Thankfully, time with friends or in some of his favorite pursuits can, eventually, tease him out of the ill humor.

  • Curious, a Tinkerer: Daniel has always wanted to know more. His Sentinel training is part of this, as they get taught a wide knowledge base in preparation for being hired anywhere in the world, but he also has some naturally curious tendencies as well. His favorite subject is history, and he's keen to learn just about anything he can. Sometimes this will lead to Daniel asking probing questions that tact would dictate otherwise, or getting a little lost in reading. It has also led him to pick up a small hobby of making, to learn how things are put together and then do just that, put them together. He has some skill with small crafts, sewing, welding, and other assorted pursuits he's taught himself to occupy his downtime.

  • Active: Though Daniel likes to keep to himself, don't mistake this as someone who crams himself away in the corner of a room. He's almost always on his feet, either wandering lost in thought or exploring to get the lay of the land. He keeps his body as fit as he can, and enjoys time spent training, sparring with others, or just seeing what new space he can get into next. And believe me, he will get himself weird places, a trait the vampire has only made worse because now he has stamina, and better balance, and the like.

Always Keep In Mind: Daniel may not laugh easily but he does smile easily, and is always willing to help someone, sight unseen at times. He does get angry, particularly at perceived threats, and can be a bit quick with a dry comment, but he's hardly malicious. He's aware of the perception of vampires, though, and keeps that side of him as under wraps as he can.

Questions: Write an IC answer to the following questions:

What do you want to study at Diatu Magicademy?
-Well, the first one that comes to mind is Discovery. Just imagine all the sorts of stuff that could be brought up with it. Being able to change your environment to your whims, to create what you need when you need it? It seems to be pretty damn applicable, and with incredible possibilities, too.

...If I can pick two? Forging. You can learn to make enchanted items in my world, and man I'd love to pick up however they're done here, too.

If you knew you could go back to the moment you left, would you leave immediately or continue your studies for a while?
-... I'd continue my studies. If I'm going to go back to where I came from, why wouldn't I want to do it with more knowledge than I left with?

Wait. I get to keep it, right? I mean, I doubt I could use it at home, but I wouldn't want all of this to just be for nothing.

If your enemy was at Diatu Magicademy, how would you react?
-My enemies, those Chaotics I mentioned, are pretty dangerous so my first priority would be to secure the area. Even if someone thinks they could take them on, they could still get hurt and I'd want any and all innocents gone. Once I do that, I can focus on the fight at hand, get it over as quickly and efficiently as possible.

When is it acceptable to resolve a dispute by force?
-When someone's going to get hurt. No ifs, ands, or buts.

What should the supreme goal of any wizard be?
-To find the top of their potential. I don't exactly mean "Supreme Ruler of All" or what have you. Not everyone's gonna have what it takes. But if you want to be the best fucking gardner you can, with a yard that gets sunny even on the cloudiest day? Then you go out there, you learn what you need to, and you grow those damn tomatoes.

Everybody's got hidden potential. Your own personal goal oughta be to find it, and reach as high as you can go.

    Special Considerations

Your Special Something: Item of Power

Rank Your House Choice: Gekronus Maius; Aer et Calculum; Eiather

    Powers:
-Wind manipulation: Daniel has some control over wind from his blood family, who has demon ancestry. While it's not exactly tempest levels, he can create "blades" with it and also solidify it as a platform to double jump and gain height when fighting.
-Suggestion: A vampire power. Does exactly what it sounds like, though at least he doesn't use it to be evil or anything...?

    Items:
-Gauntlets: His usual Sentinel weapon. He's going to come in without them, so being able to regain them would make him pretty happy. They cover the forearm and are enchanted to conceal the blades hidden behind the hand guards, and when his wind power is active can be channelled through them.

Anything Else: Being a vampire gives him a few physical boosts, mostly in speedy healing and increased senses (scent, hearing, etc). He also can go out into the sun, particularly with a hooded cloak he likes wearing, but after more than a few minutes he starts burning and will eventually pass out dead heh asleep. Friendly Neighborhood Narcoleptic Vampire, basically. This does not affect him indoors during the day, unless he's sitting near or at a window. He does also need to drink blood every few days, but this has been discussed with the mod already and substitutes are easily gotten.
